Calm Is Enough

I am Charlie. Calm, collected, patient. Some call me regal. I don’t rush. I don’t need to. When Russ leads, I can rest.

It wasn’t always like this. Once, I thought the noises outside, the visitors at the door, the changes in routine, all of it, were mine to deal with. I barked, I watched, I carried the weight of responsibility. But responsibility is heavy. Too heavy for a dog.

When Russ showed me, calmly and consistently, that he had it covered, I learned I didn’t need to. He watched the fireworks. He greeted the visitors. He led the walks. And slowly, I stopped carrying the weight.

Now, fireworks pass like distant thunder. Visitors come and go. The world outside shifts with seasons, and I remain steady. Because I trust.

I keep Elsie in check when I must. I play when it matters. But mostly, I show what peace looks like. For me, and for any dog: calm is enough.
