Helping Dogs Through Fireworks Season
Updated: Feb 20
Fireworks don’t end on the fifth of November. For dogs, the bangs and flashes can go on for weeks, through Diwali, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve. Each unexpected burst feels like a threat unless we show them otherwise.
The key is calm leadership. That means no fuss, no cuddles on their terms, and no rushing to the window. Just stillness. If we show there is nothing to fear, our dogs will believe us.
Preparation helps too. Playing firework sounds at low levels, long before the season, builds familiarity. This isn’t about flooding; it’s about calm, steady desensitisation. By the time real bangs arrive, the dog has already learned: it means nothing.

Routines matter as well. Gesture eating, regular mealtimes, steady rules. These are anchors when the world outside seems chaotic.
Remember: The Language of Danger is always about showing the dog it’s not their job to react. When you lead calmly, the fear fades.
