Beating the January Blues for You and Your Dog

January can feel heavy. Short days, muddy gardens, tired bodies, low energy. The sparkle of Christmas has faded, and routines can feel harder to keep. Dogs notice it too.

Lower energy in us means less play, fewer walks, less interaction. They feed off our mood. If we’re sluggish, they pick it up. If we’re anxious, they carry it too.

The answer is steady, simple structure. Gesture eating. Calm indoor games when the garden is too muddy. More rest when it’s needed. And for us: making sure we step outside in the light, even briefly. What lifts us, lifts them.

Charlie and Elsie, Rescue Boxer Dogs, play together, calm and gently - inside during the winter months (January).

The January blues don’t need fixing. They need leading through. With calm, kind, consistent leadership, we show our dogs: even in the darker days, the rules are the same. They can trust us.
